The Poker Star Comes To Australia

Every year the World Series of Poker makes winners who set benchmarks for the participants in the coming years. So in Australia, the popular winner of the 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP), Joe Hachem, is set to feature in a new reality television program called The Poker Star giving amateurs the chance to win a year-long professional contract.

The Poker Star Joe Hachmen is set to debut on one this Saturday with the eventual winner getting to travel with Team PokerStars Pro Australia for a year alongside a cash prize of $87,500 so as to add a greater incentive.

The proud winner, Hachem revealed that research conducted by leading online poker room PokerStars.com led him to become involved with the new program which will also be available on PokerTube.com for non-Australian viewers.

According to the Lebanon born former chiropractor and now the poker star, “The older generation is really starting to embrace poker, turning to it as a mental exercise to keep their minds active post retirement,”

He further said that “Women are coming to the game in hordes, almost matching their male counterparts for participation, particularly in online spaces. It’s encouraging to see the sport’s ranks opening up and the field of competitors becoming increasingly diverse.”

Joe Hachem also revealed that he carefully handpicked the majority of the contestants, who represent all ages but share a passion for the sport and a will to succeed, so the players were at least in the same frame of mind before the game.

“The contenders reflect the new face of the scene from Ron, a 60-year-old war veteran who took up poker in his retirement, to Sally, a 24-year-old former ballerina,” said Hachem. The former winner expects this reality television program to be quite successful and feels it is a chance to encourage more people to acquire interest in poker.

8 of 9 Inked in 2009 World Series of Poker

During the four-month break of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) last year, the aim was to give the event some publicity. Another reason was to give the nine final table members the chance to ink endorsement deals with online poker rooms-in exchange for wearing a room’s logo during televised final table play, the final table member earns a fee. The event now resumes in November and 8 of 9 tables have had deals.

From Poker Stars (www.pokerstars.com) Eric Buchman, will be on the final table andhas the second-largest amount of chips; Joe Cada, who is fifth in chips and Kevin Schaffel, who is sixth.

From Full Tilt Poker (www.FullTiltPoker.com) will be Phil “Poison” Ivey, who is seventh in chips at the final table, Steve Begleiter, who is second in chips and James Akenead, who is ninth.

Antoine Saout, who is eighth in chips, has signed on as a paid mouthpiece for online room Everest Poker (www.everestpoker.com).

Jeffrey Shulman, fourth in chips, is editor of poker magazine Card Player (www.cardplayer.com), which owns online poker room Spade Club (www.spadeclub.com).

The only member of the table without an endorsement deal with an online poker room is final table chip-leader Darvin Moon, who says he doesn’t play online poker. Despite that, numerous online poker rooms still want to hire him to endorse their rooms, but he said he is not interested in the offer.

Last year 8 out of 9 tables had deals, so wanting to spread the endorsement wealth a little more in ‘09, the WSOP instituted a new rule this year limiting the number of final table members who could endorse the same room to three. The rule is clearly a restraint of trade, and probably unconstitutional, but the WSOP doesn’t care-it needs the publicity.

WSOP edges closer to online poker with 888 deal

The World Series of Poker is at it again in the challenging world of online poker. Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment and 888 Holdings reached an agreement where 888’s Dragon fish division will provide online poker and casino software to Harrah’s in an attempt to enter the online gaming market.

“The intent is to be in the online gaming space, wherever it’s legal,” said WSOP Communications Director Seth Palansky. “We’ve partnered with 888 to develop a platform.”

Both the WSOP and Caesars Casino brands will definitely have an online presence along with Dragon fish providing ePayments, VIP services and Customer Service to help develop both brands.

888 Holdings is significant in the online gaming market in Europe, but not as well-known in the U.S. due to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) passed in 2006.

The 888.com acts as a portal to popular gaming sites like Pacific Poker, 888sport (sports betting) and Reef Club Casino.

“This is a ground breaking deal for 888.com and demonstrates our ability to provide real value to globally renowned, land-based casinos and their leading brands,” said Gigi Levy, CEO of 888.

The online presence of WSOP might be a conflict of interest with live event sponsors like Everest Poker and Betfair Poker.

Palansky says “I really don’t think there’s anything for anybody to worry about,” he said. “The WSOP will remain a premier live poker destination. Our offline events are great opportunities for our sponsors.

“If all this goes through and we do develop an online gaming site then we would be competing in some of the same markets. We would still have relationships with the other sites, however.”

According to Mitch Garber, the CEO of Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment “As we develop and roll out our interactive strategy, we have chosen to work with 888, primarily for their world-class technology, scalability and strong commitment to compliance and responsible gaming,” said Garber.

The 888 deal seems to be as controversial as any other poker deal drama, but it is for the players to wait and watch what this evolves into.

“I hope to go out there early and play in a couple of other events first,” said Ormsby of his preparations for Main Event. “I was in Vegas years ago when I was younger, but it was before I played poker. I know there are lots of juicy cash games around town to play in during the WSOP and I’m looking forward to it all.”

Despite winning his seat in next year’s Big One, Ormsby was keen to stress the fact that poker would remain nothing more than a just his leisure time activity. “I think it’s every poker player’s dream to win a WSOP bracelet, but I don’t see myself playing poker professionally. The magical, action packed and enticing world of Poker has attracted thousand of players globally. One special Poker player Kent Senter, fighting blood cancer, and struggling for life sees the chance to play at the World Series of Poker, as a dream come true!

Residing in Pittsburgh and aged 55, Senter interacted with top poker pros and made it to the second day of the Main Event even though he is a beginner. Kent Senter was exclusively interviewed by ESPN, and was visited by Nelly the recording artist which added to the excitement of his children.

According to Senter, who says his doctors have give him six months to a maximum of three years to survive his multiple Myeloma”It’s been unbelievable,”. … Now, I’ll just play it by ear, take it day by day and do what the doctor says.”

Senter was given special dealing and a full ‘expense paid’ package of accommodation, food and traveling by the Poker starts (online gambling company) and Bluff Magazine, as well as a $10,000 buy-in for the Main event.

Having discontinued his job at Lowes recently, Senter, finds online poker a good distraction as his inability to walk alot because of the tumour in his spine, hampers his work.

“Even just playing in this tournament, it takes everything out of me,” he says. “It’s hard to walk around for more than 10-15 minutes without being in a lot of pain.”

Playing free online, Senter tried to win a trip to the World Series. He says he came especially close once but could not make it. “It was just so depressing,” he says. After his wife disclosed his situation on a forum on Bluff Magazine’s Website, they were contacted by Bluff, which arranged the connection with PokerStars.

In a tournament with initally 6,494 entrants, Senter began with 30,000 chips and made it through his first day of play last Sunday. In his second day Wednesday, he got his total up to about 67,000 chips, but he lost a big pot when a flush didn’t fall for him, and he was later eliminated.

I get to see the country side,”.

Players turned away at WSOP 2009

This year the 4th of July holiday created a buzz around the Poker world. The officials at the World Series of Poker have said that they experienced a strangely low turnout at the event. The $10,000 no-limit Texas hold ‘em World Championship drew 6,494 entries, officials said after figures for the four-day opening round were added up Monday night. That was 350 fewer players than a year ago.

However, the reason for the low strength was somewhat different. More than 500 potential participants were turned away Monday on the final opening day because the Rio had already reached its seating capacity. Due to this players competed on tables set up outside of the Rio’s tournament poker room inside the convention pavilion.

Harrah’s Entertainment Vice President Jeffrey Pollack, who serves as the commissioner of the World Series of Poker said “There is no question that our strong preference was to have a bigger main event this year if possible”. He further clarified “We tried to accommodate every player we could, so it was disappointing in that sense. We simply ran out of space.”

In his defense The Vice President stated that the event was a success and that any flaws that occurred will be examined for future events. “We never want to be in the business of turning people away,” he said. “There was plenty of opportunity to play in the main event.”

On Monday, 2,809 players took part in the tournament. Among the more than 500 players rejected were some top professional poker players, including five-time gold bracelet winner Ted Forrest and six-time gold bracelet winner T.J. Cloutier, along with hundreds who just patiently waited to be accommodated.

On Friday, 1,116 players, but only 873 signed up to play on Saturday, July 4th. The tournament was expected to sell out on Monday. This year’s champion in the main event will take home almost $8.55 million. Last year, 22-year-old Peter Eastgate of Denmark won $9.15 million.

Pollock believes that the nine players who reach the final table in this year’s main event will each take home more than $1 million. This year’s main event will pay 648 places. The final table of nine will be determined July 15, and the players will return to the Rio in November to play for the title. On Tuesday, the past winners competed and fourteen former champions of the World Series of Poker, including Eastgate, survived the first day and will advance to the next round.

Moving into the second day of competition is CityCenter Chief Executive Officer Bobby Baldwin will play in the main event. Baldwin won the World Series of Poker in 1978 when he was known as “The Owl,” the quiet and studious professional poker player from Oklahoma. When he won the title at Binion’s Horseshoe, he beat a field of 42 players to win $210,000.

Baldwin has won four World Series of Poker bracelets. In 1994 he finished 24th in the main event, winning $16,800. Baldwin had 70,900 in tournament chips, the 305th best of Monday’s competitors. Among celebrities still alive in the main event were actresses Jennifer Tilly and Shannon Elizabeth, actors Brad Garrett, Jason Alexander, Lou Diamond Phillips and Marlon Wayans and Jordan Farmar of the Los Angeles Lakers.
