Rise of the Poker Bots at PokerStars’ High Stakes Cash Games

Recently ten accounts at the world’s biggest online poker site Poker Stars, have been blocked after it was determined they were, in fact, BOTS.

It was suspected for the first time on the accounts by 2+2 poker forum member “malloc” on 13/7/10 who, in spite of breaking the Terms of Condition of Poker Stars by looking at other player’s statistics on PokerTableRatings, noted three players with remarkably similar patterns.

As he mentioned in the thread:

“All of them starting playing at 200nl, played similar numbers of hands at similar winrates (if breakeven is a winrate). They all moved DOWN to 100nl within a 3 day window and repeated the pattern. They then moved DOWN again to 50nl and continue.”

At initial stages, other members consider that it was impossible for bots to beat the NL game at those high levels, and that they could possibly be short-stackers or simply players scheming with each other. But after a detailed investigation PokerStars concluded that at least 10 accounts had played around eight million hands with such resemblance in their statistics that they could only be the work of bots. The 10 accounts frozen are 7emenov; bakabar; craizer; mvra; nakseon; kozzin; demidou; koldan; Daergy; feidmanis.

Overall the 10 accounts managed to generate around $187,000 in rake and turn a $57,000 profit, showing that bots had indeed been beating their human complement at the higher stakes games.

PokerStars spokesman said:

“Finally, to address why these players played for a relatively extended period without detection, we can say that upon conclusion of this review that the bots were fairly sophisticated in certain aspects, including their human behavior modeling and their stealth capabilities.”

PokerStars gets License to Operate in France

Because of recent amendments in gambling industry rules in France has made the French online poker players worried about the new development. But it seems that, PokerStars was just biding its time and waiting to see what would be the net result from this whole licensing issue. Now, they have their own license and are perfectly able to operate in France.

The online gambling industry had faced so many problems whether in the form of licensing issues or new rules amendments and has always been an issue among governments all over the world. Some show a acceptable attitude towards it, while some glare upon it completely. Therefore after the whole issue France decided to create the ARJEL or the Authorize de Regulation de Jeux En Ligne ( The Authority of Regulation of Online Games). The ARJEN was no easy target and it enforced extremely strict guidelines for the granting of licenses.

It was a bit surprising that PokerStars stay calm in this whole situation when other poker sites did not hesitate to jump into the licensing bandwagon. Apparently, though, once the network got satisfied with how the ARJEN ran things, they too jumped into the dispute PokerStars submitted its application last May 19 and recently got their license. Therefore now they can operate their poker site in France under the URL of Pokerstars.fr.

PokerStars get this license after fulfilling the ARJEL’s strict requirements. This news is pretty much exciting for French players, because they will now be able to play free money tournaments and sit-and-go’s initially as they become members.

Still, PokerStars, one of the first ever major networks to be approved by the ARJEL, that has now promised to provide fantastic new opportunities to French players, so it’s well worth trying if you’re French.

PokerStars restricts french online poker play

Recently Poker Star has made an announcement regarding their amendment in rules and regulations regarding restricting French players. This rule came in effect since 24th of June by the Country’s government.

A pop up that appeared for French users read in part, “All money in PokerStars accounts is 100% safe and is available for withdrawal. You can choose to cash out now if you prefer.”

But those French players who want to continue with Poker Stars now can play via PokerStars.fr. They further explained for its players that “We will be running free tournaments on PokerStars.fr this weekend to win seats to live French Poker Series events.”

You can see more update and posters on the well-liked online poker forum PocketFives.com reacted to the news in a thread entitled “Goodbye PokerStars! Signed: All French Players.”

Because of this decision taken by the government traffic on PokerStars has a drastic change. According to PokerScout.com, on June 24th, the site attracted a peak of 36,566 real money ring game players, a drop of about 10% from the 40,943 players recorded one week prior. While on June 23rd, the number of cash game players was at 37,637, down 9% from the 41,585 the previous week. Therefore its obvious that this drop off was because of French Players Ban.

According to information found on PokerStars’ site, its Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) attracted 27,316 participants from France, the fourth most of any country and about 6% of the field of 462,000. The country with the most number of participants, not surprisingly, was the United States, which contributed 147,000 players to the cause in the three-tiered tournament series.

In the start of this month, the French Authority Online Games Regulation (ARJEL) granted gaming licenses to outfits like Unibet and Everest Poker.

This decision was not only taken by Poker Stars but there are also some other rooms who did this. Paradise Poker parent company Sportingbet, Betfair, and William Hill have closed their doors to the French poker market.
