Biggest Pot in Online Poker History Played By Isildur1 and Patrik Antonius

Recently on Full Tilt Poker Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, and Tom Dwan were in on the action but then two other major contenders came to Full Tilt. The first one was martonas and the second was from Sweden, named Isildur. Among the vast profits hehas scooped from high profile players is a $4 million run against Tom “durrrr” Dwan..

He may now be on the verge of collapse. In a recent heads up Pot Limit Omaha session with Patrik Antonius he shipped back $2.7 million to the Monaco-based Finn. The 2189 hands included one in particular which has the railbirds ablaze. This eventually broke the record for the largest ever pot ever player in online poker history and was of $723,938 previously held by Dwan and Di “Urindanger” Dang.

This happened when both Isildur1 and Antonius were near $450,000. It involved a $5k bet from Isildur1 and a call from Patrik. The flop came 5h-7h-Qs, prompting Isildur1 to bet another $5,000 and Patrik to raise to $21,000. Then Patrik got into gear and this made him lead out with a $48,000 bet. Isildur1 then reached up to $192,000.

Antonius then pushed his whole $415,000 stack in the middle, meaning that if Isildur1 called it would become the biggest online pot in history. He did call and it was a tie.

Patrik held Ah-Qc-9s-6h, Isildur1 on the other hand had As-Ks-Qd-10h. The final card was an 8d, handing Antonius the straight and the gargantuan $878,958 pot.

The identity of Isildur1 is still completely unknown, with many players guessing but poker pro Barry Greenstein in a post on the PokerRoad forums, claimed that he had an idea but it was to be kept a secret. He’s not a publically known player at this time, but he has done very well in big head-up games on European sites and he just started playing on American sites.

Barry went on to defend Isildur1’s anonymity, pointing out that many Scandavian players either emigrate or maintain a low profile to avoid the huge tax sums they are required to pay on poker winnings. Whoever he is, he is a true champion for Full Tilt’s high stakes tables.

Online Poker: Iveys Million Dollar Night On Full Tilt

The Full Tilt poker group is constantly innovating, and this time it has come up with a fabulous new game. It seems like Pot Limit Omaha and HA might be sidelined; this new game has definitely created a buzz. Ever since the 7-Game rotation was introduced on the Full Tilt this summer, the combination of limit and no limit action has gained popularity amongst the high stakes online cash game players.

The Full Tilt Wednesday nights action has proved that 7 Game can generate big wins and losses that go against those of action games like PLO. At a certain point 3 simultaneous games were running with three different $2,000/$4,000 7 Game tables and players like Phil Ivey, Cole cts South, Gus Hansen, Phil OMG Clay Aiken Galfond, Tom durrrr Dwan, Chau Giang and Ilari Ziigmund Sahamies were all getting in on the fun.

Th most happening thing however was the two Phils. While Galfond had a rough time, dropping almost $445,000, but Ivey went on in full action and made a total of $1,160,000 in profit for the day. His seven figure session is one of the biggest wins in online poker cash game history and rivals Iveys guaranteed minimum payout for 9th place in the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event which is worth $1,263,602. He lost back $330,000 on the tables on Thursday, but is still up over a million dollars on the week.

Iveys profits were generated at the hands of Galfond as well as Dwan (down $344,000), Giang {down $290,000), David Oppenheim (down $245,000) and Sahamies (down $116,000). Ivey was at a much higher level and was biggest winner of the night, but DINFRU (up $336,000), who is rumored to be Erik Sagstrom, Patrik Antonius (up $104,000) and Richard Ashby (up $71,000) all had great gaming sessions as well.

The game carried on again till Thursday and Ivey was the big loser while Sahamies came out on top, more than making up for Wednesdays losses with a $336,000 win. Currently it seems the 7-Game craze is not going anywhere anytime soon, which means some of the Texas Holdem and Omaha high stakes specialists are going to have to broaden their poker dimensions if they want to get in on the action.

Phil Ivey is Forward Excite at WSOP 2009

Phil Ivey defeated a strong field of 376 players to win the $2,500 Omaha high-low/seven-card stud high-low split Event 25, his seventh WSOP bracelet and his second this Series. He now is tied for sixth all-time with Billy Baxter and is just one behind Erik Seidel.

Ivey actually cracked a smile after winning his seventh bracelet.

“It’s nice to catch people,” Ivey told Nolan Dalla. “This is poker history, as you like to say. And so, to have the chance to catch someone like Erik who is (fifth) in the bracelets, to get into his category would be nice.”

Ivey joins Brock Parker as the only double-bracelet winners in 2009. Ivey also won Event 8; an accomplishment that hasn’t happened in Las Vegas since 2006 when Bill Chen and Jeff Madsen accomplished the feat. Ivey was the last player to win three bracelets during one WSOP, a feat he managed in 2002. Ivey’s daily presence at the WSOP this year has been a change from years’ past and with his dominating performance this summer, who can say that a third bracelet is out of the question? Ivey is more confident than ever heading into Sunday’s WSOP events.

If winning a WSOP final table wasn’t hard enough, Ivey was also playing in another event at the same time. During breaks from his attempt for his seventh bracelet, Ivey was playing in the $5,000 pot-limit Omaha high-low Event 27. After accumulating chips during earlier breaks, Ivey was being blinded out while he played at the final table and made his last stand just a few players before the money bubble. Ivey finished 22nd out of 198 players in that event … that he didn’t even focus on! Ivey has done a lot in the poker space, but reaching the final table in that event would’ve been a new one.

Ivey won $220,538 for the victory and when he was asked when would he get started on No. 8, he simply said, “Tomorrow.”

Other notable finishers include Blair Rodman (11th), Chad Brown (14th), Gavin Smith (23rd) and Hoyt Corkins (40th).

Phil Ivey wins his 6th bracelet at WSOP 2009

Few players go off at 2.5 to 1 against winning a bracelet in a single WSOP. Phil Ivey spread those odds on himself and cashed in big tonight by winning the $2,500 Deuce-to-Seven Lowball event.

Ivey survived dramatic ebbs and flows at the final table to beat John Monnette heads-up. The victory gives Ivey his sixth WSOP bracelet and a first-place cash of $96,361.

“I don’t play that much Deuce, so I am pretty proud that I won a bracelet in this event,” said Ivey after the match.

“Every time you win a bracelet, especially now, it is a major accomplishment.”
While the first-place cash and the bracelet are important they pale in comparison with the money this win earned him in side bets.

Rumors of million-dollar wagers include names like Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu and Ted Forrest.
Negreanu admitted that he is in the hole to Ivey during a break in the $10,000 Mixed Event.
“We have a bet standing,” Negreanu said. “Last year I beat him for $200,000 winning a bracelet, and we have $200,000 on every bracelet.”

“So he won that, but I also have bets on him in my fantasy stuff, he’s my first pick. So I lost $200,000 but I won pretty close to that back anyway.”

Financial setbacks aside, the four-time bracelet winner Negreanu was pleased to hear of Ivey’s victory.
“I was happy for him,” Negreanu said. “It was one of those weird things; he’s a good friend of mine.”
“So $200,000 is less important to me than he doing well. I like when good players win bracelets. It’s historic.”

Ivey joins T.J. Cloutier, Layne Flack, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and Jay Heimowitz among the other six-time bracelet winners, now setting his sights on Billy Baxter, the only player currently with seven WSOP bracelets.

WPT Championship update: Billirakis standing tall, Becker hangs

Initiating with style in the Bellagio’s Fontana Lounge on Tuesday the 2009 World Poker Tour Championship witnesses the dismissal of a hundred players from the staggering number of 162. With only 62 players left standing the show was destined to go on, therefore at exactly 12:00 p.m. Wednesday Steve Billirakis who holds the title for being the youngest World Series of Poker bracelet winner in history made his way in with the chip lead.

An introvert Billirakis was refraining himself from letting out the secret to his success at the World Poker Tour Championship and stated that there is no undisclosed enigma behind his achievement at the poker industry’s most renowned tournament other than him trying to play it like a cash game. Apart from trying his luck at solid games Billirakis has very few big designs regarding Day 4’s .He also stated that he wont be taking any big chances and letting his chips loose till the last two tables are in sight and the coast is clear. Billirakis also commented that there is no wisdom behind letting his chips out of the pocket before their time because by the end of the play you need to have a good number of chips to play with.

With the murderous few seated only inches away Billirakis has to face some of the most deathly faces of the poker world such as Freddy Deeb, Mark Seif, David Singer, Nick Binger and Phil Ivey.

However the biggest shocker ever that is bound to take the wind out of your sail is the participation of Boris Becker who is highly popularized for being the youngest Wimbledon champion in history. A legend in the world of tennis Becker is all set out to prove that he has the guts to play hard ball especially when it comes to poker.

A PokerStars Ambassador Becker jump-started his transition into the poker world at the European Poker Tour Grand Finale almost a year ago and though it is said that he is falling behind on chips in Las Vegas it seems that things are going quite smooth.

Becker recently stated that the experience of playing with the pros certainly brings out astounding feelings and with time he has started to feel more comfortable with his surroundings. He also commented that this is his first time making it to the fourth day of a big tournament and he is just trying to claw his way into the spot where the money starts to roll in. With more than $2 million hanging in the balance the World Poker Tour Championship is expected to reach the 50 player money spot early Wednesday.

Canadian wins sixth PokerStars Caribbean Adventure

PARADISE ISLAND, The Bahamas — (PRESS RELEASE) — Poorya Naziri from Toronto, Canada, turned $700 into $3 million today when he won the sixth PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

The 22-year-old biochemistry graduate won his seat on PokerStars in a $33 triple turbo rebuy tournament, investing only $700 to win his trip to the Caribbean and a seat in the PCA ‘Festival of Poker’ main event. He was one of 1,347 entrants in the $10k no limit hold ‘em event – a number that smashed all records for a poker tournament held outside the United States and created a total prize pool of more than $12.5 million.

Poorya, who graduated last month, admitted he was stunned by the win – one of the biggest sporting prizes in the world. He said: “It was only today that I started thinking about winning. At one point yesterday I was down to virtually nothing but I got off to a good start today and at that point I thought I might have a shot.” Poorya, who has never been to Europe, has also a won a seat in the EPT Grand Final which takes place in Monte Carlo, April 28 – May 3.

The record field at this year’s PCA included 1,059 PokerStars players, of whom 746, including Poorya, had won their seats online with PokerStars.

Team PokerStars Pro Alexandre Gomes made the final table but was knocked out in fourth place, earning $750,000. Among the stars in the tournament were German tennis legend and PokerStars ambassador Boris Becker as well as 26 Team PokerStars Pros.

The roll call of top players included last year’s PCA champion Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, former world champions Joe Hachem, Greg Raymer and Chris Monymaker, the multiple bracelet winner Daniel Negreaun and sponsored PokerStars player Peter Eastgate, who became the youngest ever WSOP world champion when he won $9 million in November. Other stars who took part included Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Chris Ferguson, Antonio Esfandiari and Eli Elezra.

The Team PokerStars Pros Vicky Coren, Barry Greenstein, Marcin Horecki and Tom McEvoy also cashed in the main event, alongside sponsored players Kathy Liebert – 12th for $120,000 – and PokerStars Six players Ylon Schwartz and Eastgate.

Also sponsored into the event were PokerStars Six players Ivan Demidov, Darus Suharto and Dennis Philips as well as the Norwegian star Johnny Lodden, the American baseball legend Orel Hershiser and the Brazilian Indy stock car racer Gualter Salles.

Team PokerStars Pros had a great week during the PCA ‘Festival of Poker’ with Grospellier, last year’s PCA champion, taking home $433,000 for winning the $25,000 PCA High Roller event and Hevad Khan winning the $2,000 side event for $200,000. Eastgate followed up his cash in the main event by winning the $5,000 event for $343,000.

Other events this week included the Battleship tournament, won by Bahbak “bigredAK” Oboodifor a $44,800 first prize, and the finals of the World Cup of Poker, won by Germany.

John Duthie, the Executive Producer of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour, said: “The PCA is the first major poker event on the hectic 2009 poker calendar and the recent worldwide financial crisis did nothing to deter more than 1,300 people entering the $10,000 buy-in main event that smashed all records for a poker tournament outside of the States.”

Casino City’s 10 Most Fascinating Poker Players

We hope you enjoy the inaugural edition of Casino City’s 10 Most Fascinating (Poker) People. And please, feel free to forward this link to everyone you know. Good old “Babs” got 13.2 million people to tune into her little TV show. If we want to keep up with that pace, we’re going to need some help.

10. John Juanda

John Juanda was already considered one of the most accomplished players of all time. But the 37-year-old’s victory at the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe in October sealed the deal.

Not only did the win gave Juanda his fourth-career bracelet, but he did it in record-breaking fashion as the length of play at the final table in London was 19 hours and 10 minutes, which shattered the previous record for longest event in WSOP history by more than three hours. Juanda, who was born and raised in Indonesia and arrived in the U.S. in 1990, now has 45-career WSOP cashes to his name and 23 final table appearances.

9. Tiffany Michelle

Let me be perfectly honest. If this were a list of the “10 Most Likable Poker People of 2008,” Ms. Michelle would not have even been considered. But the fact that she was so “unlikable” during the World Series of Poker Main Event this summer definitely lands her on the “most fascinating” list.

Michelle enjoyed a fast ride to stardom this summer at the Main Event. A year ago at this time she was a TV personality covering poker. This year she threw her collection of goofy hats into the proverbial ring and got involved with the $10,000 Main Event. The deeper she went in the event, the more attention she received. Now keep in mind, if she was just another 20-something male making a run at the Main Event crown, there really wouldn’t have been any story here. But since she is an attractive woman who wore outlandish outfits and gawky jewelry, she had the normally sarcastic poker blogs eating out of her hands and the ESPN cameras focused in on her.

She was even more enticing after she caused a mini-controversy by adding another sponsor logo to her apparel midway through the tournament. In addition, her behavior at the table was deplorable. She didn’t make a lot of friends with her antics (example: celebrating every time another woman got knocked out or calling the clock on tablemates during big hands) and snide comments (”Oh, I remember you. You’re the guy who takes forever to make a decision.”), but I have a sneaking suspicion that all part of her act. When ESPN began airing the WSOP telecasts, Tiffany quickly became the player that everybody “loved to hate.” It was good for Tiffany because it gained her attention and it was good for ESPN because it created a villain; a female version of Phil Hellmuth, if you will.

In fact when we interviewed ESPN Senior Producer Jamie Horowitz before the November Nine, he told us the three things that most people mentioned to him about the WSOP coverage were Phil Hellmuth’s deep run into the Main Event, the truck-driving, St. Louis Cardinals hat-wearing chip leader and the disdainful Tiffany Michelle.

In the end, Michelle’s impressive run ended when she finished 17th. But she gained much more than a $300,000-plus paycheck. She became a certified “somebody” in the poker world and it appears she’s going to be able to cash in one that for the foreseeable future.

8. Phil Hellmuth

The Poker Brat didn’t add to his record-total of 11 bracelets this year, but that didn’t stop him from getting major face time on ESPN.

Phil Hellmuth appeals to god for better cards during the Main Event. (photo by Gary Trask, Casino City) Before the Main Event even started, Hellmuth made news by breaking the record for career cashes in the WSOP with 65. He also made a deep run into the final table of the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. Event.

But those were simply warm-up acts. Once the Main Event started, Hellmuth was at his very best, entertaining the railbirds with his antics every day as he made his deepest run into the Main Event since 2003. He continuously berated fellow players – particularly those with an online background – and he even got so animated that he got penalized for repeatedly calling Cristian Dragomir “an idiot.” That penalty, of course, was overturned the next morning, which caused a major stir.

The bottom line: When your star shines as bright as Phil Hellmuth’s, you don’t need to win tournaments to gain attention or be named a “fascinating” person by a certain Web site.

7. Phil Ivey

Speaking of guys who can get their fair share of the spotlight by not winning bracelets, we present the estimable Phil Ivey.

First off, Ivey came into this year’s WSOP when he cashed in for $1.5 million by winning his first WPT title at the LA Poker Classic at the beginning of May. Then as soon as he hit Vegas for the WSOP, word quickly spread that he was taking action on whether or not he would win a bracelet and the action went as high as $1 million.

The result had Phil playing in a lot more events at the WSOP as usual. He seemed bent on winning proving his fellow players. He even showed up at a re-buy event with $100,000 in chips at his disposal. He made even more of a scene when word leaked that Phil had placed some major dough (it was rumored to be as much as $2 million) on his LA Lakers to defeat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals and at times he could be seen sitting at the poker table paying more attention to the TV with the basketball game on than the cards being dealt in front of him.

In the end, the Celtics took down the Lakers and Phil fell short in his quest for another bracelet. As a matter of fact, he was bounced from the Main Event on Day 1. Do the math and Phil dropped may have lost more than $3 million of his plentiful stash in less than one month.

6. Scotty Nguyen

Scotty Nguyen is one of the most celebrated and recognizable poker players in the history of the game. When he suffered a major meltdown in the late stages of the 2007 Main Event that actually made him so distraught that he wouldn’t leave his house, there was much sympathy for him. So when he stunned everybody by winning the prestigious $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event this year it could have been a shining comeback moment for him.

Instead, the win was overshadowed by Scotty’s repeated final-table drunken tirades (see video above), which were captured by the ESPN cameras for all to see. In fact, ESPN analyst Norman Chad said on-air, “Tonight, Scotty left his class in a beer bottle.”

Nonetheless, this was a huge win for the Prince of Poker, who found it in himself to have a sober moment after victory and recognize the late Chip Reese, for whom the championship trophy is dedicated to. Nguyen claimed more than $1.9 million and pushed his career earnings to nearly $10 million. He also snapped a seven-year drought by winning his fifth bracelet, which helped him joined an exclusive club of five-time WSOP gold bracelet winners that includes Bones Berland, Allen Cunningham, Ivey, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Ted Forrest, Berry Johnston and Stu Ungar.

5. Yuval Bronshtein

Even before he pulled off the implausible at FTOPS IX, Yuval Bronshtein was already a fascinating character.

The brash 24-year-old – who often wears a Mohawk-haircut of some sort – began playing poker when he was a freshman at the University of Maryland. Two weeks into the second week of his senior year, he decided he was making a good enough living playing poker online so he dropped out in order to play full time.

His poker prowess was put on display in August when he not only became the first player to ever win consecutive events in Full Tilt’s Online Poker Series, but he did so in a span of less than 12 hours by multi-tabling the two tournaments. The two victories earned Bronshtein $172,387, or about $7,500 per hour. Not bad for a college drop out.

But what we liked best about Bronshtein was how he told us how much he is driven by “making history.” When we interviewed him the day after this astonish feat, Bronshtein said, “I don’t think it’s something that anyone will duplicate ever again. That’s what I want more than anything else; to do things that no one has ever done before.”

For Bronshtein, it’s not simply all about the Benjamins and we love him for it.

4. Ivan Demidov

Speaking of making history, Ivan Demidov did something this year that will never be duplicated as he became the first player in history to make two WSOP final tables in the same year.

First, the 27-year-old Russian outlasted a field of more than 6,800 in July to earn a spot in the coveted November Nine at the Main Event. While killing time before play resumed, Demidov entered the World Series of Poker Europe and ended up making the final table where he finished third. Then it was back to Las Vegas where he made it all the way to the heads-up portion of the event before falling to Peter Eastgate.

A year ago at this time, you probably never heard of him. But make no mistake about it, Ivan Demidov is going to be a name you’re going to hear in poker circles for a long time to come.

3. Erick Lindgren

A lot of people were happy to see Erick Lindgren finally get earn his first WSOP bracelet. Lindgren is one of the more well-liked and personable players in the game so when he defeated Justin Bonomo during heads-up play for his first piece of WSOP jewelry in the $5,000 Mixed Hold’em Event, plenty of his peers were thrilled for him.

Further proving just how classy he is, Lindgren simply celebrated the win by pumping his index into the air and saying “Thank God. I finally got one.” He then called his parents back in California to give them the good news and that he would be shipping to bracelet to them as a token of his appreciation.

Lindgren wasn’t able to win a second bracelet at the 2008 WSOP, but he certainly came close. He finished third at the aforementioned $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament that was won by Nguyen and overall he ended the summer with more than $1.3 million in winnings and the WSOP Player of the Year Award.

When he was officially awarded the Player of the Year Award at the Main Event final table in November, Lindgren gave a heart-felt speech and told us that he would be giving away the striking Red Rock custom-made Harley-Davidson motorcycle that went along with award to his brother.

2. Dennis Phillips

When the November Nine was decided back in July, WSOP officials sat down each of the final tableists and told them to keep in mind that for the next 117 days they would be “ambassadors of the game.” Apparently, Phillips, who was the chipleader, took this to heart. He accepted virtually every interview request (a total of about 200) that came his way. He threw out the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game and visited Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and he made it his mission to use his newfound celebrity to help him raise awareness for a couple of his favorite charities.

When the action got underway for the final table, Dennis Phillips Nation simply took over the Rio. Phillips flew more than 100 of his friends and family to Las Vegas and there were hundreds of people in the auditorium mimicking Phillips by wearing the white, long-sleeve, trucker shirts and St. Louis Cardinal baseball hats. His fans were stunned to see Phillips almost go from chipleader to first player busted, but Phillips survived and made it all the way back to finish in third place.

Dennis Phillips may never win a big poker tournament in his life, but his impression on the game in 2008 – and at the Main Event final table in particular — was undeniable.

1- Peter Eastgate

But a quick background check shows that Eastgate is indeed a great story. First of all, the 22-year-old from Denmark studied economics in college before becoming a poker pro just three years ago. He quickly became one of the top online professionals and now he’s on top of the poker world as the reigning WSOP Main Event champ. Along the way, Eastgate broke Phil Hellmuth’s record as the youngest person to ever win the Main Event.

Through it all, Eastgate handled himself with dignity and class and appeared to be mature well beyond his 22 years, especially considering he was in a foreign country while making a run at winning the most-anticipated final table in WSOP history. He was a gracious and well-deserved winner of the Main Event and that makes him a no-brainer choice as our No. 1 Most Fascinating Poker Person of 2008.
